Sires to Vinco and Vorster

South African jockey Barend Vorster is really making his mark as a new employee for top trainer Tony McEvoy.

On Saturday, March 23 he produced an outstanding ride to land Vinco ($7.50) a half-neck winner of the Martin Collins Polytrack Sires (1500m) beating Power Scheme ($5) with Really Discreet ($2.45 fav), 1-1/4 lengths away third at Mornington.

Vorster, who has been based in Singapore, has ridden six winners from 14 rides since coming to Australia, including the Group One Newmarket on champion filly Sunlight.

McEvoy praised Vorster after Vinco’s win saying it had been a super ride.

He said the jockey had been cool after being undecided prior to the race as to how it would be run.

“We didn’t know how to map this race being the first time out to this trip,” McEvoy said.

“I left it to Barend, to ride the horse where he’s comfortable and we got back to last and I didn’t think that was great, but he weaved his way through the field beautifully.

“It was a really solid performance.”

McEvoy thought Vinco’s race experience was crucial in the final stages.

“He’s been a bit fussy and I’ve contemplated gelding him a couple of times,” McEvoy said.

“He’s got a bit of upside, so we’ll consider going to the Sires’ in Adelaide now if he tells me he’s got some more to offer.”

Vorster is loving his decision to come to Australia.

“It’s nice riding these quality tracks,” Vorster said.

“I’m really enjoying these surfaces and obviously it’s helping having these quality horses underneath.

“Today, he jumped well but the pace was a bit too strong for me.

“From the 600m when they started to fan out, I weaved my way through, and he really quickened for me.

“He’s a nice young improving horse, I think he’s got potential and he’s going to go on from here.”
