MyRacehorse cheer Unusual Pearl

The MyRacehorse ownership group were out in numbers to cheer home Unusual Pearl at the Sandown Hillside circuit on Wednesday, January 10.

Despite covering ground throughout, Unusual Pearl ($9) outstayed her rivals to score a 1-1/4 length win in the Get On Extra Handicap (2400m).

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, and ridden by Michael Dee, the four-year-old was particularly strong over the final 200 metres picking up second placed Untethered ($21) which had been hailed the winner halfway up the straight.

Dee had Unusual Pearl three wide racing midfield for the majority of the race before asking her to extend over the final 600 metres.

She made good ground before charging late to grab the leader and win convincingly, much to the delight of the many members of the MyRacehorse group.

Finn Mcarthy, stable foreman for the McEvoys, said it was uplifting to have so many owners on course to celebrate.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” McCarthy said.

“They (MyRacehorse) are great supporters of ours and to have winners for them is fantastic.

“Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for the McEvoys, sourced her from New Zealand and has done a great job.

“We always thought she would see out a bit of a trip, and today first time out to 2400 metres really suited her.

“Hopefully, she can go on with it now.

“She had a bit of a tough run, she was quite wide for most of the trip but Michael (Dee) wasn’t too worried and gave her a great ride to finish strong late.”

Winning jockey Michael Dee also noted the presence of many members of MyRacehorse.

“There were plenty of shouts of “Great ride” as I returned to scale,” Dee said.

“I’m not sure they were looking at the right horse in the run,” he joked.

“Early we had cover, but then lost it for the rest of the race.

“She is only small and might have appreciated being out in the open.

“I had a query over her at the trip, but she really powered through the line, super effort.

“Today, we were able to build momentum around the turn, find her top at the bottom of the dip and she was able to sustain that run.”
