Jay Jay flies to victory

A decision by trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy to head to Nhill paid a winning dividend with lightly-raced three-year-old filly Jay Jay Flyer.

“We have always thought she had nice ability,” trainer Tony McEvoy said.

“She was working nicely mid-year and we took her to Murray Bridge for race debut, but she was still immature.

“The filly has been growing in her maturity, so Calvin and I decided to head to Nhill to give her a chance for an easy win.”

Jay Jay Flyer, a red hot $1.50 favourite, ridden by Jarrod Lorensini, loved her race day experience bounding away for a 2-1/2 length win in the Leyonhjelm Building Services Maiden (1150m).

Fine Things ($16) came home for second, a half-length in front of Cato Lake ($6).

The daughter of Sir Prancelot jumped well from gate one and Lorensini led early ensuring the filly held the inside ground against the rail.

Turning for home he gave her more rein and Jay Jay Flyer bounded away.

“I liked her effort today,” McEvoy said.

“Jarrod was able to control the tempo, then the filly gave a strong kick in the home straight.

“I’m sure she had enough on the line but was never in danger.

“She will gain in confidence and fitness and I’m hoping eventually she can take her form to the city.”
