Think Winning too strong again
A beautiful ride by Luke Nolen saw Think Winning chalk up another victory at Werribee on Sunday, December 5.
Nolen had Think Winning ($3.80) tracking the leaders early in the 1400 metre Wyndham City Council Benchmark 64 Handicap before setting him loose turning for home.
The five-year-old quickly established a winning break and ran well through the line to score by three-quarters of a length from Sly Corner ($4.80) with Elite Drake ($18), 1-1/4 lengths away third.
Think Winning has now won two of his past three starts for trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy.
The gelding now has three wins from just 12 starts and proving very effective at today’s trip.
Tim Hanley, representing McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said he felt 1400 metres might be the perfect distance for the five-year-old.
“It was great to see him win on the good track today,” Hanley said.
“It was probably a bit firm for him last start at Mornington, but I think we’ve also worked out to keep him a bit fresh back to 1400, that was the key today.
“It was a call from Tony and Calvin to come back to 1400 and obviously it was a great ride by Luke.
“Everything worked out, he was just in the perfect position in the run.”
Winning jockey Luke Nolen felt Think Winning had done a good job.
“The track upgrade was a slight query, but he travelled very well for me,” Nolen said.
“He let go and reeled off quite nicely.
“There must have been enough juice to keep him comfortable.
“Importantly, I think he is most effective around the 1400 metre mark, and they may program his races around that in the future.
“He was very strong through the line, and he was effective on that firmer ground today.”
