Top jockey Luke Currie demonstrated why he is at the top of his profession with a super ride to land Motorsports a winner at Southside Pakenham on Friday, November 7.

Coming from a wide draw, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Motorsports jumped well, and Currie let her balance up just off the leaders before asking her to join in turning for home.

He rode hands and heels trying to nurse her for as long as he could. The filly gave a good sprint at the 250-metre mark to grab a winning break and ran well through the line.

Motorsports ($2.15 fav) scored by a half-length from Let Lily Loose ($11) with Southern Slammer ($6.50, 2-1/4 lengths away third.

Trainer Tony McEvoy believes Motorsports has better wins ahead.

“She was really good,” McEvoy said.

“Luke (Currie) was very good on her, kept hold of her head.

“She travelled up well into the straight which gave me confidence watching it.

“When she got challenged it looked like she had plenty in reserve.

“At home, ever since she came across to us from Team Godolphin, she has always shown us that she is a Saturday class filly.

“She has really nice ability but is still working it out.

“When the carnival dies off, this girl will come into her own, but we won’t get too aggressive.”

Winning jockey Luke Currie believes Motorsports would be better on firm ground despite winning tonight on rain-affected going.

“I wanted to nurse her as long as I could,” Currie said.

“I feel the track is racing almost heavy and she was up in trip at just her second start.

“She was the class horse of the field and able to do it on the bridle, but it was always a worry when I let her off the bit.

“When I felt that one come to our outside I had to press the button a little bit.

“She quickened quite sharp but was out on her feet late which was why I rode her hands and heels for as long as I could and asked for that little bit of effort late.

“I think she showed the qualities of a handy horse.

“I think she was a little classier than those and ideally I’m sure she would be better back on top of the ground.”
