Hiatus wins well

Hiatus indicated she can score better wins after a victory at Ballarat on Thursday, November 20.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, the three-year-old filly proved too strong in the Sportsbet Feed Class One Handicap (1100m).

Hiatus, a well backed $2.70 chance, and ridden by Luke Currie sat on the favourite Frosted In Time ($2.15) before proving too strong winning by a half-length with Secret Elegance ($16), a similar margin away third.

The daughter of Snitzel began nicely from gate three and Currie pushed her through to trail Frosted In Time which had been ridden up to lead.

On straightening, Currie eased the filly off the back of the leader and asked her to extend which she did to claim victory.

Trainer Tony McEvoy, back from a trip to Streaky Bay in South Australia to show the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups to his 96-year-old mum Connie, said Hiatus could win in the city.

“It was a lovely win,” McEvoy said.

“It looked to be very fast speed on paper, and we were hoping she could stay in touch.

“But she really wanted to be there and travelled up beautifully.

“It was a really nice watch in the run.

“I think she can go to town now. Hopefully, she can kick on.

“She has taken time to mature but she is a quality filly with a good pedigree.

“I think she can go on and be even better next time.”

Winning jockey Luke Currie agreed Hiatus had a future.

“The race didn’t work like I thought it may play out,” Currie said.

“She began quite fast and when she won her first start she was up on speed over a shorter course.

“I was happy to use her speed with the way the track is and land on the back of the favourite.

“If we were running well we were always going to be one-two with it.

“I thought I had the favourite covered when I came off its back.

“I didn’t want to get it too early but by the same time I didn’t want to let it get away.

“She gathered it in quite good for a smart win.”
