Make time for Maketime
Maketime indicated a bright future when he won easily on debut at Wangaratta on Monday, December 22.
Basically ridden hands and heels, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained three-year-old charged to the line in the Worklocker Wangaratta Maiden (1400m).
A $4 chance, Maketime was well ridden by Jake Noonan to score a two-length victory from Pick A Symphony ($3.90 fav) with Bannerlu ($31), three-quarters of a length away third.
The gelding jumped well and Noonan allowed him to settle third on the fence in the run to the home turn.
He then pushed Maketime into the clear and the three-year-old raced away to win easily.
Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said the stable had been confident coming to Wangaratta.
“He is a lovely bred horse and the team at Milburn (Creek Thoroughbred Stud) sent him down in great order,” Moore said.
“The result is fantastic for the ownership group, John Muir leading that, Alan Jones, John Baxter. They have got a really nice horse.
“Maketime is really well bred being a half to Magic Time and Henline.
“Jake (Noonan) was positive out of the gates and got him into a lovely spot.
“He just needed a bit of luck at the top of the straight.
“It is probably the perfect time of year for Maketime, just off-season, he can go through the grades.
“We have always had plenty of time for him but had to geld him last preparation, he is big, heavy guy but it could be the making of him as a racehorse.”
Winning jockey Jake Noonan said Maketime had a promising future.
“It was a pretty easy win from a nice draw,” Noonan said.
“He had trialled up pretty good. Rayan and the team gave me good confidence before the race.
“Maketime is very well educated and made my task simple.
“He did a good job, he got left in front but was able to win with good authority.
“When he hit the front he had a bit of an idle but if something had come up to challenge I’m sure he would have come back.
“As he goes up in grade he will have something to chase.
“He is a progressive type.”
