Hiatus impressive

Hiatus stamped herself as a filly of potential with a powerful win at the Gold Coast on Friday, December 19.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Hiatus pushed herself between runners at the 200-metre mark and finished best to win the Happy Birthday Kylie Benchmark 68 Handicap (1100m).

The victory boosts her prospects of lining up in the $3 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday, January 17.

On Friday, jockey Luke Currie allowed the three-year-old daughter of the stallion Snitzel to balance up early and the filly settled second last in the field of 11.

There was a strong early tempo which ensured Hiatus had the chance to run home powerfully.

Currie brought her a little wider in the home straight, but the filly still needed a run but bullocked her way through and exploded in the run to the line.

Hiatus ($9) won running away by three-quarters-of-a-length from Heavenly Impact ($7) with Corrupted ($9) a length away third.

Trainer Tony McEvoy said Hiatus was still learning her craft.

“She has won three of her six starts, but I believe she has a lot more to offer,” McEvoy said.

“It was a really good win by this filly tonight.

“She settled back after they went very hard early which may have flattered the performance, but she had to tough it out, push and shove.

“She did look a little awkward a few times in the home straight, but she got through and rounded the race off very impressively.”

Winning jockey Luke Currie said Hiatus had done a great job.

“The tempo was on early, so I was happy to be out the back getting her into a rhythm,” Currie said.

“The leaders were always going to come back in the straight, it was just a matter of getting a run.

“She had to bullock through but once in the clear let down superbly.

“I am sure there is more improvement to come.”
