Heart Of Glass sprints brilliantly

Talented mare Heart Of Glass produced a brilliant sprint to win at Caulfield on Saturday, April 5.

The four-year-old came from third last in a field of 11 with 400 metres to run to win the Noel Rundle Handicap (1200m).

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, it was Heart Of Glass’ fourth win from just 10 starts.

Heavily backed from $3.50 into $2.80 favourite, Heart Of Glass was outpaced early with a good tempo to the home turn before jockey Harry Coffey eased her to the centre of the track.

The daughter of the stallion Impending lengthened quickly to assume control 100 metres from home and won by a long neck from Prancing Spirit ($5) with Namesake ($7) a length away third.

Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for McEvoy Mitchell Racing said Heart Of Glass would probably head to Adelaide seeking black type for her pedigree.

“I thought Harry (Coffey) got into a good spot early,” Moore said. “He had ‘Stacky” (Daniel Stackhouse on Prancing Spirit) inside him.

“I don’t think she really handled the bend all that well and wobbled a bit. She really let down well.

“Now we can head to Adelaide with her for some stakes races.

“1200 (metres) fresh would probably be the go but we got her out to a mile (1600m) last prep so that wouldn’t hold any problems at all.”

Winning jockey Harry Coffey said Heart Of Glass had an excellent sprint.

“It is not a bad habit, but she wants to relax early and go to sleep in her races,” Coffey said.

“There is nothing wrong with that if you have the turn of foot to get out of trouble and she does.

“You have to have to have to have a certain demeanour about you when you are riding horses that should be winning but aren’t travelling all that well.

“We had to get stuck into her around the bend and there was an opportunity to get rolling and get the march on our rivals and she did that.

“She had the turn of foot to get away from them.”

Coffey said Heart Of Glass didn’t turn that well around the bend.

“I think it is because she is so big and powerful, and you have to guide her around then let her turn of foot happen.

“Even though her form is good at Caulfield she does have a little bit of trouble cornering.

“I understand they might be taking her to Morphettville, and I think that big track would suit her.

“She is in a good vein of form, and it is all positive.”
