Bavette’s big bonus

A rails-hugging ride by jockey Jake Duffy landed Bavette a $100,000 bonus at Kilmore on Saturday, April 5.

Bavette ($5) came from midfield along the fence to grab a neck win from Miss Xtravaganza ($4.20) with Heat Of The Night ($6) a similar margin away third in the Boost Financial Group Maiden (1450m).

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, the three-year-old was purchased at an Inglis Easter Sale and today’s race carried a massive $100,000 Inglis bonus.

Bavette jumped nicely but was a little outpaced early and settled midfield.

Turning for home, a clear run eventuated on the inside and Duffy drove the gelding through and he was able to grab a win.

Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said the bonus was as great result for connections.

“The extra bonus money was an incentive to start Bavette at Kilmore,” Moore said.

“He got a pair back further than we would have liked.

“Credit to Jake, he didn’t panic and chose the perfect path to come through.

“No doubt that run will further improve the gelding, but the bonus was a fantastic way to start his career.”

Winning jockey Jake Duffy said he had ridden for luck on Bavette.

“He was really good today but still does a bit wrong,” Duffy said.

“He knuckled a but at the start which put me a pair back further than I wanted to be.

“I had to bide my time and wait for a bit of luck to appear.

“As it turned out all the runs came my way.

“He was able to get his head down and it was as good tough win.

“He is a horse with some upside.”
