Centennial Park impressive

Centennial Park indicated he was a three-year-old of potential with a comfortable maiden victory at Geelong on Thursday, December 6.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Centennial Park raced away from his rivals to score a four-length victory in the Elephant And Castle Hotel Maiden (1421m).

Winning jockey John Allen had an armchair ride on the well-backed $2.80 favourite beating Eagle Express ($3.50) with Little Carol ($11), 1-1/2 lengths away third.

The three-year-old showed the experience benefit of his close debut second at Donald, beginning well from his wide draw, settling second controlling the tempo before dashing away in the home straight.

Trainer Calvin McEvoy said Centennial Park had been impressive.

“That was a lovely performance,” McEvoy said.

“It was great for Ron and Judy Wanless, they are big supporters of our stable.

“It was nice to see the horse break through, he was very professional.

“We are privileged to get horses like this; Ron buys all his own horses, and he is a great judge.

“I love that Centennial Park can put himself on the pace, and it was a great ride by Johnny (Allen).

“We can work him through his grades now.

“He is by Super Seth, handles all his work easily, doesn’t overexert himself at home and that is the making of a nice horse.”

Winning jockey John Allen said Centennial Park had won easily.

“He was very impressive,” Allen said.

“He is a pretty straight forward horse – he began okay, we were able to work outside the leader, was always travelling comfortably, quickened up nicely and put the race to bed fairly easily.

“The leader tried to steady the tempo, but my horse was always going comfortably, always travelling well and I was quite happy from the 600 (metres) that he was going to put them away.

“Centennial Park is a big strong horse. It was quite firm today, but I reckon he wouldn’t mind getting his toe in a little bit.

“I think he might be a nice horse in the autumn in the staying three-year-old races.”
