Book makes good reading

A positive ride by Patrick Moloney saw By The Book run out an easy winner at Warracknabeal on Saturday, September 2.

Moloney was assertive from the start of the Emmett’s John Deere Warracknabeal Branch Maiden (1200m) riding up By The Book to take the lead despite coming from the extreme outside draw in the field of eight.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, the three-year-old filly was never challenged to win comfortably by 1-3/4 lengths.

By The Book ($3.40 fav) defeated No Outcast ($9.50) with Major Makeover ($5.50) a neck away third.

The win came up at the filly’s third race start.

She has been a steady improver and judged by the ease of the win, more victories are in store.

Winning jockey Patrick Moloney was impressed.

“It was a nice performance,” Moloney said.

“It was pretty plain and simple from my point of view.

“She really sprung the gates positively from gate eight of eight.

“I took up the initiative and found the front which is very advantageous around here at
Warracknabeal, being up on the speed.

“She came back underneath me and relaxed good which she needed to do out to 1200 (metres) today.

“She actually didn’t get around the circumference of Warracknabeal, wanting to hang out, I was actually hoping she would want to hang in so I could corner a lot better.

“So, she actually never fully balanced up for me.

“I thought it was a good performance in the sense she had a few gears up her sleeve, but she never got on her right leg coming around that corner.

“She got a bit tired getting towards the line, but I think on a bigger track she would switch her legs a lot better and would accelerate a lot better.

“At the end of the day, she still got the job done and it was a nice performance, and hopefully she will go on with it.”
