Becharm too good first up
Trainer Tony McEvoy landed a race-to-race double when Becharm scored a narrow win at Morphettville Parks on Saturday, March 9.
Newcomer Mayan won the previous race easily but Becharm only scored in a photo finish in the AAMI Three-Year-Old Maiden (1300m).
Ridden by Todd Pannell, the filly, a $6.50 chance, scored by a head from Olive Grove ($16) with Sugar With That ($9.50), a half-length away third.
Pannell had Becharm midfield early on her return to racing and produced her with a perfectly timed run to win.
John Cornell, SA stable foreman, said the filly had lost her way a bit last preparation.
“It took her a while to learn the craft but this time in she has been doing everything perfectly,” Cornell said.
“She’s grown, strengthened up and really is a different horse.
“The owners, including Cathy Hains and her group in Victoria, have been patient and are being rewarded.”
Cornell said it was good for Todd Pannell to have a win on his resumption from injury.
“Todd’s a beautiful rider and rode her perfectly.”
Pannell said Becharm had given him a good ride.
“I had hoped to be a bit closer in the run as she was first up at 1300m but had to go to Plan B after she didn’t jump that well,” Pannell said.
“She settled good but did get a bit tired late, but I would think there is good improvement.”
