More wins ahead

Better wins are in store for Quaffany, a maiden winner for trainer Tony McEvoy at Murray Bridge on Cup day, Friday, October 19.

Backed from $1.35 to start a red-hot $1.24 favourite, Quaffany, ridden by Jamie Kah, scored a half-length win in the Bridge Carpet Court Maiden (1400m) beating John The Rodent ($18) with Crown Harmonium ($51), 2-1/2 lengths away third.

Assistant trainer Calvin McEvoy said the winner was still inexperienced.

“Today was only his third start and he didn’t handle coming down the hill to the home turn,” McEvoy said.

“He is still learning the caper and will improve with racing and an increase in trip.

“We’ve got a lot to work with and there are bigger things in store.

“It was good to get a win for the nice ownership group and I think they’ll have some fun going forward.”

Winning jockey Jamie Kah echoed McEvoy’s thoughts.

“I really like this horse, he’s very raw and can only improve,” Kah said.

“He didn’t handle coming down the hill at all.

“He got pushed wide on the turn, but I felt it was better to allow that rather than push him off balance.”

Once in the straight Quaffany kept winding up and ran strongly through the line.

The gelding was purchased for just $65,000 by McEvoy Mitchell Racing at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
