Winning Oakbank double

Trainer Tony McEvoy and stable jockey Barend Vorster brought up an Oakbank double on Easter Monday, April 22 when three-year-old Winning Partner proved too good for his rivals in the Fulham Gardens SC / Kungka Dreamtime Class Two Handicap (1400m).

Successful earlier in the day with Abshiroo, McEvoy and Vorster had a few anxious moments before Winning Partner was successful.

The three-year-old, carrying 61kg, dipped slightly coming down the hill around the home turn and was left flat-footed for a few strides before regaining his action and taking a split to grab victory.

The $1.65 favourite, Winning Partner scored by three-quarters of a length from Ashady Hussy ($10) with Barshonti ($13), a half-length away third.

McEvoy praised assistant trainer Calvin McEvoy, South Australian stable foreman John Cornell and the staff at Kildalton Park, Angaston for helping get the gelding back to winning form.

“He has been his own worst enemy,” McEvoy said.

“He has been missing the start slightly and in the company he has been racing you can’t afford to do that.

“We brought him back to Angaston, took his head gear off and gave him plenty of barrier practice. Today, he jumped the best of his career.

“With the horses racing away from the inside rail, it was a tough job for Barend from barrier four, but he did a great job.

“Once the opening came in the home straight, Winning Partner came through to win well.”

McEvoy said the Listed $100,000 Adelaide Galvanising Guineas (1600m) at Morphettville on Saturday, May 11 was a possible target for the gelding.

Winning Partner now has won three races from just 12 starts and took his stakes past $120,000.
