Under And Over on top
Talented sprinting mare Under And Over came out on top at Moonee Valley on Friday, November 15.
The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained mare did just enough to grab a photo finish win in the Simpson Constructions Benchmark 64 Handicap.
Ridden perfectly by John Allen, Under And Over ($3.20 fav) scored a head win over Coeur De Lyon ($21) with Jordy Girl ($14), two lengths away third.
Owned by Wayne Mitchell’s Pipeliner Bloodstock Syndicate, the mare began well and settled just off the speed of the leader Coeur De Lyon.
Under And Over looked likely to win easily when Allen allowed her stride up on the home turn, but the runner up refused to yield, and the pair raced side by side to the line with victory going to the McEvoy-trained runner.
Trainer Calvin McEvoy said Under And Over was progressive and now had three wins from just seven starts.
“She is a nice mare, but we have had to be patient,” McEvoy said.
“Thanks to Wayne Mitchell, he owns the mare and is our biggest supporter. It is fantastic to win in town with her.
“She has always shown ability, we have just had to be patient.
“She was holding onto her coat earlier during the trial stages and first up, but she presented beautifully tonight.
“It was a great ride by Johnny (Allen) and thanks to all the staff at home.
“Under And Over has had her soundness issues in the past and we have had to be patient, but Wayne (Mitchell) has always shown us full support.
“I think she can go through her grades now.”
Winning jockey John Allen said it had been a good win by Under And Over.
“She began fairly but recovered quickly and was able to kick through,” Allen said.
“I kicked up on the horse outside her and she travelled well.
“We moved up to win and I thought we would get there easier than what we did. But she really didn’t know how to put the runner up away and had a bit of a think about it.
“When I got stuck into her she picked up again and got there.
“It was a good win and hopefully she can go on.”
