Trainer proud of Nic win
Talented three-year-old Charming Nic started a Queensland campaign with a strong win on the Sunshine Coast Poly Track on Sunday, May 18.
Trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy believed the gelding would be suited by a northern preparation and he did not let them down.
Charming Nic ($1.28 fav) led throughout in the Sunshine Coast Civil BM 55 Handicap (1400m) scoring by 1-1/4 lengths from Kettlebell ($5.50) with Set Ablaze ($51), 1-1/2 lengths away third.
After jumping nicely, jockey Mark Du Plessis urged the gelding forward to find the front. Turning for home, with the challengers looming up, Charming Nic extended to win well.
Trainer Tony McEvoy was very impressed by Charming Nic’s win.
“It was a fantastic performance today,” McEvoy said.
“I’m not sure the ride suited him.
“The plan was not to go forward and find the front.
“I was surprised that Mark dug him up early after jumping away.
“The result was he over-raced early and was on the inside which was the worst part of the track.
“Charming Nic then over-travelled because he had been asked to go early.
“The horse was still able to round off the race with a victory, and that was with 63kg on his back.
“There is a lot more merit to this win that it might appear.
“I was very proud of Charming Nic’s win.”
