Sunshine for Grammy

An excellent ride by jockey Linda Meech saw Grammy’s Sunshine record a win at Sportsbet Ballarat on Saturday, February 14.

Coming from gate three in the Sportsbet Jockey Watch Benchmark 56 Handicap (1200m), Meech had the three-year-old filly up with the leaders to the home turn before asking her to sprint to victory.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Grammy’s Sunshine ($3.30 fav) had a battle before scoring a head win from Dantooine ($11) with Superset ($5) two lengths away third.

The filly always looked the likely winner in the race up the home straight, but the runner-up refused to give in.

Trainer Tony McEvoy said Grammy’s Sunshine deserved her win.

“She has been racing without much luck this filly,” McEvoy said.

“Her last run at Cranbourne was quite good, she just wasn’t suited around the tight track.

“It was a positive ride today by Linda.

“The filly has taken a while to come through but I believe she will continue to improve.

“We have always liked her, but she has just taken time.”

Winning jockey Linda Meech said Grammy’s Sunshine enjoyed racing on her spacious home track.

“Getting out to 1200 metres on a nice big track instead of Cranbourne was ideal,” Meech said.

“She just got a little bit too far out of her ground last start.

“Today she was very genuine, and the second horse didn’t want to lay down.

“She just kept trying. She is only small but has a really good heart.

“I think there are more wins in store.”
