Sunshine at Stawell

Grammy’s Sunshine indicated she is ready to fulfill her early promise with a good win at Stawell on Sunday, January 4.

Trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy took the three-year-old filly to country Victoria seeking a confidence-boosting win and the goal was achieved in the Discover Northern Grampians Maiden (1100m).

Jockey Harry Coffey placed her one-out, one-back in running before asking her to lengthen turning for home.

Backed from $2.75 into $1.80 favourite, Grammy’s Sunshine drew clear for a 1-1/4 length win from Begonia ($7.50) with She’s Loaded ($4.60) a short half head away third.

Tim Hanley, stable foreman for McEvoy Mitchell Racing said Grammy’s Sunshine was definitely on the improve.

“We have always liked this filly,” Hanley said.

“She ran well early as a two-year-old in the Inglis Banner.

“She has just taken a little bit of time to develop.

“Her last run at Cranbourne was quite good and we were pretty confident today.

“It was a great ride by Harry (Coffey), that is why we love having him on.

“Harry has put in a lot of hard work for the stable over the past couple of years and hopefully we can keep on rewarding him.”

Winning jockey Harry Coffey said he enjoyed riding for McEvoy Mitchell Racing.

“I get a lot of rides off Tony & Calvin, they are very good to me,” Coffey said.

“Grammy’s Sunshine got a lovely run today.

“I was following the right horse in the run, edged out on the home turn and she was too good.

“She was a bit better than them.

“She was really good in the straight, extended nicely.

“I think she likes a bit of ground that is forgiving. Even though it will get firmer, it is in good nick now.

“I had a bit to do with her early on and she has always shown a bit.

“She has a really good turn of foot and gives you a nice feel. She just needs to build and get some confidence.”
