Successful debut by Zoulane
The winning association of trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy with offspring of champion sire Zoustar continued at Penshurst on Saturday, November 19.
The champion mare Sunlight springs to mind immediately for the McEvoys, but today it was Zoulane, having her first start, which showed speed and strength to take out the Ace Radio Maiden (1000m).
Solid in the market at $3.30, Zoulane, ridden by Jarrod Lorensini, showed nice speed to share the lead to the home turn before taking control in the straight.
She no sooner had she gone clear than the runner up moved alongside and looked likely to win.
But Zoulane responded to the challenge and drew clear to win by a long neck from Geminga ($4) with Fiery Revolution ($3.20 fav) a head away third.
The winner was a popular result as she is owned by Flying Start Syndications and a large group of owners.
Zoulane cost $65,000 at the 2021 Gold Coast National Yearling Sale.
Now a three-year-old, the filly had been given a good chance to mature and she repaid the patience.
