Ring rocking at Morphettville
Recent stable addition Rock The Ring dominated for trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy at Morphettville on Saturday, September 18.
Stable jockey Barend Vorster was at his brilliant best rating the four-year-old perfectly to take out the Quayclean Benchmark 74 Handicap (1200m).
Backed from $5 into $3.70 Rock The Ring led throughout and sprinted away in the home straight to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Echo Boomer ($12) with Vongole ($4.20), 2-1/4 lengths away third.
Rock The Ring jumped quickly and Vorster crossed to lead then was able to get away with soft sectionals in the run to the turn before asking his mount to dash away.
Trainer Tony McEvoy said he believes the gelding might measure up in stronger races.
“I think he is a good little horse,” McEvoy said.
“Barend judged the race superbly and Rock The Ring sprinted strongly.
“The horse was trained at Lindsay Park and we heard it was going to change stable.
“We spoke with the owners and they decided to choose us and I’m delighted they did.
“We ran him on the Ballarat early in August but he is not a big horse and the 60kg was a bit much for him.
“He pulled up a bit flat, so we sent him across to Murbko for a sweeten up.
“He worked tremendously at Angaston this week and I was confident he would be hard to beat today.
“Unfortunately, there are not a lot of suitable races on the calendar for him so I might have drop him back to 1100m in Adelaide in about three weeks.
“But I am hopeful he might eventually step up to stakes class.”
