Quick return by Dramaticus

Recent stable addition Dramaticus scored an impressive first up win for trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy on Sportsbet Ballarat Synthetic on Sunday, July 27.

The meeting had been scheduled for Appian Bendigo but was transferred to the Ballarat Synthetic on Saturday because of the heavy rain over Friday and Saturday.

Ridden by Luke Currie, Dramaticus ($2.40) scored a half-length win from Capital Asset ($2.25 fav) with Lovin’ Laughs ($12), 2-1/4 lengths away third in the Ranbuild Sheds Cup Benchmark 64 Handicap (1400m).

The four-year-old began well but Currie was happy to let him get into a rhythm and settle second outside the leader.

As the tempo increased around the home turn, Currie asked Dramaticus to go for home and the gelding ran strongly through the line to win.

Trainer Tony McEvoy said Dramaticus had arrived in good order to the stable.

“He was placed down low today,” McEvoy said.

“We placed him very low in his benchmark, and he did a good job.

“He is still big and round and carrying plenty of condition, but I was very pleased with what he did today.

“We didn’t know a lot about the horse, but I am very relaxed with Luke Currie in the saddle. I asked him to ride the horse, and he worked it out beautifully.

“Dramaticus is a big strong horse but mentally he is still a bit fragile and immature.

“I think there is a lot more upside with the horse in time.

“For the present we will continue to place him low and hopefully keep winning.”

Winning jockey Luke Currie said Dramaticus had won nicely.

“He was pretty straight forward today,” Currie said.

“In a four-horse field today he was able to land outside the speed, and we controlled it from there.

“It was nice and easy for him.

“He cruised over and was nice and relaxed.

“He doesn’t have a huge turn of speed, but he held the gallop in the straight through the line.”
