Pick ‘N’ Mix wins again

Promising three-year-old filly Pick ‘N’ Mix took another positive step at Sportsbet Ballarat Synthetic on Tuesday, June 17.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Pick ‘N’ Mix made it three wins from just four starts with victory in the Porter Plant Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m).

Ridden by Harry Coffey, the filly, the $2.30 favourite, took the lead past the 200-metre mark to score by a length from The Showvinist ($3) with Ichiberu ($10), 3-1/4 lengths away third.

Pick ‘N’ Mix jumped well from her extreme outside gate of eight and Coffey was able to slot her in third in the running to the home turn.

Brought to the outside, the filly let down strongly to take the lead and win well.

Trainer Calvin McEvoy said the stable had higher goals ahead for Pick ‘N’ Mix.

“She is a filly sourced by OTI, Terry Henderson and his team,” McEvoy said.

“We (McEvoy Mitchell Racing) were lucky enough to get the call up and got a few people involved.

“She is building up a good record and that was her third win from four starts.

“She came here today a little underdone, looking a bit wintery in the yard with a lot of improvement to come.

“It was nice to see her race as she did, and she will certainly improve.

“Pick ‘N’ Mix is a filly we would like to chase for black type for the connections.

“There is a race we marked early on, the Creswick Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, July 5 which is a Listed race, and it gives her the chance to pick it up.

“There was a lot of pace on today which there always going to be.

“Harry (Coffey) was told to ride her where she was happy, and it worked out perfectly.”

Winning jockey Harry Coffey agreed Pick ‘N’ Mix was a filly on the improve.

“She is a nice filly with an impressive record,” Coffey said.

“The only day she let us down is when I went down to Mornington and she went ordinary, so it was nice to get a win on her today.

“Pick ‘N’ Mix has plenty of upside as she is not humming yet and will improve off today’s win.

“I like that she is relaxing a bit better this preparation, once she gets a bit of cover she is happy to switch off.

“This race today worked out perfectly.

“We got a nice run, and I looked up and didn’t want to let Linda (Meech) on the leader get too far ahead and look silly if I didn’t catch her.

“We popped out, she quickened up good and was peaking late so there is improvement there.

“Her record speaks for itself, and she is only getting better.”
