Pick ‘N’ Mix leads throughout
Free running filly Pick ‘N’ Mix proved too good for her rivals with a bold performance at Geelong on Tuesday, January 28.
Jumping to the front, Pick ‘N’ Mix, trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy led throughout in the A G Haines Builders Handicap (1125m).
The three-year-old filly, a $4.20 chance, withstood late challenges to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length from Stellar Mofeed ($11) with Salsa Fellow ($6.50), a quarter of a length away third.
Pick ‘N’ Mix was keen to race throughout under jockey Luke Currie and gave her rivals the chance to pick her up but they couldn’t.
Tim Hanley, stable foreman for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said Pick ‘N’ Mix had won impressively.
“It was pleasing to see,” Hanley said.
“Probably that race experience in 64-grade last start put her in good stead today.
“I’m not sure how much further the boys (Tony & Calvin McEvoy) will go with her this prep. She has come a long way, she was a very green horse when she first got to the stable.
“No doubt she has got a lot of improvement in her.
“Being by (sire) Turn Me Loose she might get further later on but at this stage we will keep her to these shorter races.
“Pre-race, we were a bit worried about the head wind and it seemed to get stronger, but she was good enough to win.”
Winning jockey Luke Currie believes Pick ‘N’ Mix has excellent potential.
“She is a nice style of filly,” Currie said. “She will graduate to better races than this.
“She is still learning, was a bit hot and over doing it in her races.
“It would be nice to see her relax and work it out – she is doing a good job even doing a bit wrong.
“It was her tempo today, not mine, it would be good if she came back a bit and let herself be controlled a touch.
“She will learn that with racing and I’m sure Tony & Calvin will work on that with her.
“I think there was a lot of merit in the win today, racing into that head wind, it was tough to do it, so that was a nice effort.”
