Knurl rallies to score

Things were looking grim up the home straight for Knurl in the colt’s race at Bendigo on Saturday, October 18.

In a two-horse race, Knurl, after leading and dictating the tempo, was challenged and headed near the 200-metre mark in the Vatman Group 2YO Maiden (1000m).

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained colt, the $1.40 favourite, responded to the urgings of jockey Linda Meech, came back and drew away for a 3-1/4 length win from Dance The Boogie ($2.60).

It was astute placing by the McEvoys for the Godolphin-owned Knurl as he picked up $22,000 in VOBIS bonuses as well as the $17,600 first prize.

The son of star sire Brazen Beau ran well when fourth in the Maribyrnong Trial on debut at Flemington on October 4 and today’s win indicates he has a good future.

Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said the added bonuses had made the race similar to winning a city race.

“I must admit that at the 200 (metres), I was starting to be concerned,” Moore said.

“But he is a nice two-year-old and responded in good fashion.

“I think the benefit of race experience played a part in the win.

“He has shown enough for the stable to look for another suitable race provided he pulls up okay.”

Winning jockey Linda Meech believes Knurl can go on to another race.

“That was good,” Meech said.

“He has had a good day out and got some prizemoney.

“He is lovely and sound and pulled up good.
