Homer by Wrigley Field

Wrigley Field provided a home run for connections with a last-to-first victory at Swan Hill on Sunday, September 28.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Wrigley Field came from last in the field of eight to grab a win in the bet365 Same Race Multi Maiden (1200m).

The three-year-old gelding, having just his second race start, was given a top ride by Harry Coffey to land the win.

Wrigley Field ($5) scored by a long neck from Done Leavy ($3.20 fav) with Regor ($5.50), four lengths away third.

The gelding jumped slowly and settled at the tail of the field.

Turning for home, the field fanned in the straight and Coffey elected to stay near the inside and look for a run between other runners.

He pushed the gelding through, and Wrigley Field exploded clear, then withstood a late challenge from the runner-up.

Rayan Moore, Racing Manager for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said Wrigley Field was related to former stable favourite Frankie Pinot.

“He is owned and was bred by John and Anne McDonnell in Western Australia out of their mare My Last Fling,” Moore said.

“She is also the dam of Frankie Pinot which won a Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool and was a very popular horse with our stable.

“Wrigley Field continues a great association with John and Anne as they also raced the stakes mare Cool Passion.

“It was a calculated ride by Harry (Coffey) waiting for the run in the home straight.

“I was impressed by the way he accelerated through once he was pushed between horses.

“He has still got a lot to learn, and we look forward to his progress.”

Winning jockey Harry Coffey believes Wrigley Field has the potential to develop as he matures.

“He has been a big of a work in progress,” Coffey said.

“We have had to be patient, but I was glad to get a win today.

“I actually thought it was a better win than it might have looked.

“He didn’t jump well, got back, very green. We had to take a very tight run, and he burst through.

“He started to peak on his run but sighted the horse out wide and stuck to his task well.

“A good win and I think Wrigley Field might like it a bit further.

“He just needs racing now because he still doesn’t know what he is doing.

“At stages today he was really on and off the bridle.

“He will be better for the day out and looks like he has still got plenty of improvement.”
