Group 3 win for Motorsports

Improving three-year-old filly Motorsports boosted her value with a powerful victory in Group 3 company at Caulfield on Saturday, November 30.

Coming from second last on the home turn in the field of 10, Motorsports sprinted strongly to grab the win in the $250,000 Quayclean Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m).

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, the daughter of Street Boss, now has two wins and a close second from just three starts.

Ridden by Harry Coffey, Motorsports ($4 fav), owned by Godolphin, scored by three-quarters of a length from Recuperato ($17) with Regeneration ($6.50), a length away third.

The filly began well from her wide draw, but Coffey allowed her to balance up and get into a rhythm settling at the tail of the field.

She came wide on the home turn and lengthened beautifully in the home straight gathering in the leaders to grab the win.

Winning jockey Harry Coffey has a good opinion of Motorsports.

“I was lucky and fortunate enough to find her early in her career when she swapped from James Cummings to Tony & Calvin,” Coffey said.

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t ride her first up as my wife was due to give birth on race day.

“Lucky enough, I was able to get back on board today.

“She is a ripping filly.

“She is a pleasure to ride, does everything right and has a turn of foot, that is everything you want in horses.

“I wanted to follow Mark (Zahra on Chergui) as I thought he would take me into the race, but he wasn’t able to do that.

“I had to come out and get rocking, probably 50 or 100 metres earlier than I wanted, and it probably showed late when she was peaking.

“Motorsports won the race pretty easily in the end. It was a good effort.

“Tony (McEvoy) wanted me to ride her conservatively and let the race pan out and have one last crack at them.

“It all went well.”

Finn McCarthy, stable foreman for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, said Motorsports had continued to improve and was a worthy Group 3 winner.

“Harry had to make a run from quite a way back,” McCarthy said.

“She was very strong to the line.

“We feel Motorsports has improved from run to run and hopefully there is more to come.

“The win is terrific for Team Godolphin to get a Group 3 victory.

“She is a gorgeous Street Boss filly and hopefully she can continue to build her record.”
