Gee Tee accelerates

Three-year-old filly Gee Tee hit the accelerator late for an impressive victory at Ballarat on Friday, September 19.

Resuming from a spell, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Gee Tee, ridden by Harry Coffey, powered past her rivals to win the Manhari Maiden (1400m).

The daughter of stallion Grunt settled well back in the field of 11 before Coffey brought her to the outside on straightening.

Gee Tee ($3.70) warmed to her task before exploding over the final 200 metres to win by a long neck from Pharoah’s Glory ($3.90) with Angelos ($31), two lengths away third.

The filly was having her first run since February when she had finished midfield at her only previous start over 1100 metres at Ballarat.

Trainer Tony McEvoy was delighted with Gee Tee’s victory.

“Her last 100 metres was really impressive,” McEvoy said.

“We’ve been really pleased with her and think of her more as a 2000 metre filly.

“So, the 1400 metres first up was ideal, and we thought she would really run well.

“She exceeded our thoughts and was fabulous late.

“We started low today, and I think we will stay low and see where she takes us.

“She is a filly I think will be well suited in the autumn in Adelaide.

“Gee Tee is well related and her half-brother Sav On Ice won the Balaklava Cup last Wednesday, a listed race, while she was home in the box increasing in value.”

Winning jockey Harry Coffey was also impressed with Gee Tee’s finishing burst.

“She was really good,” Coffey said.

“We planned to ride her nicely today and finish off looking for a good preparation.

“She certainly did that and got the job done.

“I got stuck behind a slow one early and had wanted it to cart me into the race and make her job easy.

“But it was stopping, and I had to expose her about 100 metres early than I wanted, especially first up.

“So, I was quite impressed with how she rounded it out and was strong through the line.

“She has still got a bit of learning to do, she is still a little bit hot in the head and has got improvement to come.

“It wouldn’t hurt if she filled out a little bit, and I imagine in six months that would be the case.

“When they win like she did today all you can be is excited.”
