Elphinstone thrashes rivals

Elphinstone smashed her maiden tag in devastating fashion at Ballarat on Sunday, March 24 much to the delight of part-owner Jen Hinkley.

Ms Hinkley made a frantic dash to Ballarat, arriving just in time, to see Elphinstone thrash her rivals for a well-deserved win after recording four seconds from her first six starts.

The win brought up a training double for Tony & Calvin McEvoy who had a brilliant win with Miss Sunshine earlier in the day.

Elphinstone wanted to make a mark, dashing clear over the final stages to score a six length win in the Mittys Evans Evans Maiden (1200m).

Backed from $1.75 into $1.24 favourite, the three-year-old filly looks headed for bigger wins beating Fair Game ($5.50) with Love ‘n’ Run ($16) a neck away third.

Jockey Harry Coffey had Elphinstone away well from her outside draw to sit second, outside the lead and control the tempo of the race.

When asked to extend in the home straight, the daughter of Street Boss left her rivals in her wind draught racing away.

Trainer Tony McEvoy is excited about Elphinstone’s potential.

“It was a really nice win, very impressive,” McEvoy said.

“She is a good filly as her form would say, three of her seconds had been in good quality races.

“We decided to place her low today and she really dominated that race, controlling the race from the outset.

“There are bigger things to come for her.

“She is eligible for those big money VOBIS races, and we will be targeting her towards those now she has the confidence of a win and knows how to attack the line.

“It was a really good win for a great group of owners who have been strong stable supporters.

“We’ve known for some time that we have a good filly, and now we are going to see the fruits.”
