Been Our Angel dominant
Lightly-raced Been Our Angel is starting to live up to her name for connections with a strong win at Kilmore on Tuesday, January 14.
The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained four-year-old scored his second win from his past three starts with victory in the RMBL Investments Rising Stars Race (1200m).
Ridden by Sarah Field, Been Our Angel ($5.50) scored by 1-1/4 lengths from Tarzi Calling ($4 fav) with Lucky Duck ($5.50) a long neck away third.
The gelding now has two wins and two seconds from just six starts and judging by his effort at Kilmore is sure to add to that record.
Previously haven given trouble at the barriers, Been Our Angel jumped on terms with the field today and was quickly outside the leader and happy to go even quicker, but Field kept him comfortable and in a good rhythm.
Turning for home, the gelding worked his way to the front and ran strongly through the line never really looking in danger.
Finn McCarthy, stable foreman for McEvoy Mitchell, admitted he was surprised Been Our Angel had been prominent early.
“It was not necessarily the plan to be right up on the speed,” McCarthy said.
“We wanted to get a bit of cover with him, however, he wanted to over-race early on.
“Sarah did a great job to try and get him back under underneath her. Fortunately, he was too strong at the end.
“The owners have been very patient with Been Our Angel as he has had heaps of troubles at the gates, and he still does a bit wrong.
“But he has got ability, and it is great to get a win with him.”
Winning jockey Sarah Field said she was also quite surprised by Been Our Angel’s early exploits.
“That was not the plan at all how he raced early,” Field said.
“He bounced really well and mustered quickly. I did not want to upset him too much and got into a nice rhythm.
“There was nowhere near as much speed as I thought there would be, so I just kept him comfortable.
“It wasn’t the ideal position where I wanted to be, but he was travelling really strongly.
“I thought it was a really tough win as he went pretty hard and had to do it at both ends.
“It was great for the owners as the horse did a really good job today, he was far too good for them.”
