Talented McEvoy debutant

Trainer Tony McEvoy finished the 2017-2018 season on a winning note when Just Rolling scored on debut at Gawler on Sunday, July 29.

McEvoy, who has had a sensational season, looks to have another promising galloper in Just Rolling.

Ridden by the stable’s Victorian rider Luke Currie, Just Rolling ($2.60) scored a half-length win in the Barossa Volkswagen Two-Year-Old Maiden (1200m) from Lunch Money ($21) with Exalted Trail ($2.15 fav), a similar margin away third.

Assistant trainer Calvin McEvoy said it had been fantastic that a large number of owners had been on course to witness the winning debut.

“He (Just Rolling) has shown Dad and I great potential in training but it was good to see him bring it to the track today,” McEvoy said.

“He is a big, strong colt who is still full of himself and needed a strong senior rider and that is why we decided to bring Luke across from Melbourne.”

After settling in the running line midfield, Currie urged the colt forward approaching the home turn and he quickly dashed up to go to the lead.

Currie said it was at this point that Just Rolling had tended to ‘switch off’ thinking the job was done so he had continued riding hard and the colt responded to claim victory.

“He is a beautiful horse but still working it out,” Currie said.

“I’m sure he will continue to improve with age and racing and looks well suited to getting over more ground.”

McEvoy said the stable would see how Just Rolling recovered after today’s run before planning a future program.
